DSpace Training for UNN Library Staff

The Library Principal Programmer took time to give a refreshers' training to the Library staff involved in uploading content to Dspace. Dspace is an open source software used in the management of the library's Institutional Repository (IR). The participants were the trainer, Submitters and Editors. The workflow starts from the Admin who does the configuration; the submitters who submit items to various Communities and Collections, and the Editors who edit the metadata, approve, and Commit to Archive. The process is designed in such a way that an Editor can reject a submission. This sends an alert to the Submitter who then effects the correction.

Ever been curious to know what it takes to launch a new journal?

We interviewed Dr. Cato T. Laurencin, Editor-in-Chief of both Regenerative Engineering and Translational Medicine and Journal of Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities, to learn more about what motivated him in launching his two Springer journals and what the process involved.

 

Dr. Laurencin will be the Kavli Distinguished Lecturer and Plenary Speaker at The Materials Research Society (MRS) Spring 2016 meeting (28-March through 1-April, 2016) in Phoenix, AZ. Additionally, he will be receiving the Society for Biomaterials Founder’s Award at the World Biomaterials Congress (17-22 May, 2016) in Montreal, QC, where the first Cato T. Laurencin Travelling Fellows will also be presented. 
Q:  You’ve launched two very different journals over the last few years very close together in time but quite different in scope (Regenerative Engineering and Translational Medicine and Journal of Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities, respectively). What motivated you?
A: In both cases I think that we are in a transformational period for both areas of scientific inquiry. For health disparities, there really isn’t an international publisher of scholarly articles on racial and ethnic health disparities like Springer and health disparities I think will define medicine in the 21st century. For Regenerative Engineering, we feel we are at the dawn of a new field. We anticipate great things.

Promoting Children’s learning through technology literacy: challenges to school librarians in the 21st century

Abstract: In today’s world of technological revolution, children need to be encouraged to be ready to acquire lifelong knowledge and skills in the 21st century. This paper presents an overview of the application of technologies in children’s learning environment
which apparently will give them the opportunity of making use of their thinking skills in order to develop socially and emotionally. The paper also looked into various ways of using these technologies in developing children’s horizon, like using (CD –
ROM story books and picture books, mobile and makerspace technologies). The paper examined the roles of librarians in meeting the needs of children in the application of technologies in promoting children’s learning in the 21st century and challenges faced by librarians in meeting the demands of technology literacy development of children. Strategies on how to overcome these problems were provided. Recommendations that can help in promoting children’s learning through technology were also provided.
